2002 PlayStation Pro 2.0 Game Awards It wasn't easy, but I finally finished counting all of the votes. Here are the best games of 2002 - as chosen by the readers of PlayStation Pro 2.
Best Action Game
WINNER: Hitman 2: Silent Assassin- 35% Looks like Eidos owned this category. Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and TimeSplitters 2 are both titles from the UK based publisher.
Best Adventure Game
WINNER: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City- 75% As you can see, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City spanked all of the other titles in this category with 75% of all the votes! Onimusha 2 came in at a distant 2nd with a mere 13% of the votes.
Best Multiplayer Game
WINNER: SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals- 45% There was a nice selection of online games last year, but you guys chose SOCOM as the best of the bunch. SOCOM's graphics aren't all that great, but the realistic gameplay and the voice chat easily makes up for it. Tony Hawk 4 is also a very additive online game, with plenty of game modes and support for up to eight players in each game.
Best Sports Game
WINNER: Madden NFL 2003- 45% This is the third year in a row that Madden has won our "Best Sports Game" award -- despite competition from Sega with NBA 2K3. We can't wait to see what EA will do with next year's edition.
Best RPG
WINNER: Kingdom Hearts- 61% Squaresoft received some criticism for using Disney characters in its RPG, but Kingdom Heart's epic storyline and stunning visuals really helped bring the game on top. As for Suikoden III, most people say that it wasn't as great as the previous games in the series, but many of you still seemed to love this title.
Best Racing Game
WINNER: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2- 56% The original Hot Pursuit game was considered to be one of the best racing games on the PS One, so it's no wonder that Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 won this year. Evading the police has never been this fun.
Best 1st/3rd Person Shooter
WINNER: SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals- 29% As usual, there were a lot of 1st and 3rd person shooters this year, but once again, SOCOM's voice chat feature must have given it an advantage over Medal of Honor: Frontline.
Best Fighting Game
WINNER: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance- 32% Its been a very long time, but its good to see a Mortal Kombat game back on top. Tekken 4 did well, but the game must have turned some people off since it wasn't a huge step forward in the series.
Best Graphics
WINNER: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City- 29% Grand Theft Auto: Vice City did not offer the sharpest graphics or the best textures this year, but it made up for it with its incredible attention to detail. Everything from the swaying palm trees to the planes taking off and landing at the airport really gave the feeling that Vice City was a living and breathing city. Oh, and the amazing draw distance didn't hurt either.
Best Music/Sound
WINNER: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City- 67% Vice City's sound effects were nothing to write home about, but its radio stations really pulled people back into the 1980s. The talk radio stations were nothing short of stunning either, with hilarious guests and dialogue.
PS2 Game of the Year
WINNER: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City- 58% There were a lot of excellent PlayStation 2 games released in 2002, but none of them even came close to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Vice City simply overwhelmed all of the other nominees.
Game Developer/Publisher of the Year
WINNER: Rockstar- 42% All of the game developers and publishers that we nominated this year had released at least one AAA PS2 game during 2002. Electronic Arts arguably released the best overall titles this year, but Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was such a great game, that many of you seemed to think that Rockstar deserved to win. Better luck next year, EA.
