Britney's Dance Beat By: Matt C. on June 30, 2002 I know what many of you are thinking: "Britney Spears in my living room?! w00t! Where do I sign up?" Unfortunately, as I expected, it turns out that Britney's Dance Beat is nothing more than a marketing suckfest. Metro and THQ knew that slapping Britney's face on the cover would sell the game so they obviously didn't even bother fine tuning the gameplay. Dance Beat is geared more to mainstream gamers, so the simple gameplay fits it well. Simply press the correct buttons as they become highlighted in the revolving interface. Unfortunately, this leaves absolutely nothing for gaming veterans who want something more than just "Simon Says" type gameplay. To make things more interesting, the game allows you to throw "attacks" to your opponent if you dance well, but this is completely automatic. Unlike Metro's other music game, Bust-A-Groove, you have zero control over when you want to attack the other player. This completely throws any chance of strategic gameplay out the window. To make matters worse, Britney's Dance Beat only includes five songs. Granted, the game is filled with unlockable bonus videos and such, but none of them are very appealing. All in all, Dance Beat takes less than one hour to beat. You can try playing head to head with a friend, but trust me, the enjoyment won't last long. As for the character models, they are detailed and the motion capture work is nice, but it's not enough to save BDB. I suppose hardcore Britney fans will enjoy Dance Beat, but everyone else should avoid this amazingly shallow game.
