Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
By: Matt C. on October 22, 2002

Update: Our Vice City FAQ page is now up.

I was given some more info regarding the upcoming Grand Theft Auto Vice City soundtrack albums earlier today. All seven of the CD's will be released on October 29, 2002. Also included below are links to sound clips from each album. Enjoy!

Vrock:

A relentless collection of hard-rock head bangers, brought to you by the inimitable Lazlow. From a time when rock & roll was all about living and playing hard. Featuring classic material from legendary acts like Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne.

Sample Audio Clip

Wave 103:

New wave steam rolled onto Vice City's music charts in the early 80's, thanks in large part to the efforts of celebrated radio personality, Adam First. This disc features revolutionary acts broken by Wave 103 such as Flock of Seagulls and Blondie.

Emotion 98.3

In early 1980's Vice City, if you got caught in an extramarital affair with your wife's aerobics instructor, there was only one man to turn to: Fernando Martinez. Fernando brought make-up and make-out music to all of Vice City's lovers. Impassioned with the spirit of emotionally charged anthems by artists like Cutting Crew and Mister Mister.

FLASH

The mainstream never popped like it did in the early 1980's.. And there never was a radio host like Toni. She bopped her way into Vice City's heart to the tune of classic songs by Hall & Oates, Laura Branigan and many others.

Sample Audio Clip

WILDSTYLE

The Magic is here. Super Rockin' Mr. Magic brought the innovative new sounds of rap music and early 80's electro to the streets. Wildstyle Pirate Radio hosted Mr. Magic's rap attack for all of Vice City's fly girls and fly guys, troopers and troopettes. Throwing down timeless jams by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Whodini and more.

Sample Audio Clip

Fever 105

Funky soul sounds from the one and only Oliver "Ladykiller" Biscuit, who manned the airwaves of Fever 105 through out Vice City's most turbulent era. "Ladykiller" put the wiggle in your jiggle, the slide in your stride, and reminded Vice City's denizens that times were never too tough not to party. With classic tracks from Kool & the Gang, Michael Jackson and many others, he's got what you need.

ESPANTOSO

The sound of Vice City's burgeoning latin scene of the early 1980's. Carribean-infused jazz to soothe the soul and take your mind off the city's troubled streets. Featuring specially selected tracks from Irakere, Lonnie Liston Smith and more.

October 17, 2002 Update

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is only 12 days away and the e-mails regarding the game are really starting to flood in now. One of the most frequent questions is what are some of the new things you can do in Vice City. With that in mind, let me talk about some things I forgot to mention in my previous updates.

First of all, GTA: Vice City is not just some measly "expansion pack" for GTA3. The game has been basically built from the ground up. Don't worry though, you can do just about everything from GTA3 and the controls aren't too much different from the previous game.

Let me start with the motorcycle. The streets of GTA3 were mostly filled with either "grocery getters" (family vehicles), Mafia cars, or high-end sports cars. Vice City is no different, but thrown into the mix will be several types of motorcycles. Have a strange fetish for Harley motorcycles? Don't worry, Vice City has you covered. In addition, there will be dirt bikes, imported rice rockets, mopeds and more. The best part is that you can shoot not only to the side, but directly in front of you! Oh yeah, you can also pull off wheelies anytime you wish with the analog stick (assuming that you are traveling fast enough).

Another interesting new feature is the ability to bail out of your car while it is in motion. Sure, you'll take damage or possibly kill yourself if you're going too fast, but desperate situations call for desperate measures, right? Imagine loading your car with explosives and driving it into another object just before bailing out.

When you got into a gun fight in GTA3, there wasn't much you could do to avoid getting turned into swiss cheese unless you ran away. In Vice City, you can crouch behind objects (such as cars) to avoid getting hit. The police also take cover, so watch out! Luckily, if you get close enough to them, you can use the new melee attacks to dish out punishment at close range.

One other thing I forgot to mention in previous updates is that you can shoot out the tires of just about any vehicle in the game using a weapon that allows you to go into a first person view. Once again, AI controlled thugs can do this too to slow down your getaway. Very cool indeed, but what's even better is that you can now shoot through the windshield. No need to pull that punk out of his ride to give him a beating -- just take him out in the comfort of his own vehicle!

That's all for now. Before I go, let me just say that the insane stunt jumps are back so don't ask me about them. And yes, you can use a chainsaw or samurai sword to cut people up. Lastly, our GTA3 FAQ page was quite popular, so expect me to make one for Vice City very soon. Update: Our Vice City FAQ page is now up.

September 17, 2002 Update

Earlier today, Rockstar posted some new information on Vice City's radio stations. If you haven't heard already, everyone's favorite talk radio host, Lazlow, will return in GTA: Vice City. Of course, Lazlow is at least 10-15 years younger in Vice City, so he won't be hosting a talk radio show yet. Instead, he will be the DJ for VRock -- Vice City's rock station.

Here is a list of all the other radio stations according to Rockstar's web site:

Station / Music Genre / DJ
VRock / Rock / Lazlow
Flash FM / Pop / Toni
Emotion 98.3 / Emotive Anthems / Fernando
Fever 105 / Soul / NA
Wave 103 / New Wave / NA
Wildstyle Pirate Radio / Hip Hop and Electro / NA
Radio Espantoso / Jazz and Latin / NA

September 3, 2002 Update

Ever since Rockstar finally took the cover off of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the e-mails have been flowing in with gamers that are eager to know more about the game. One of the most popular question is what type of new vehicles there will be in Vice City. For starters, there will be a motorcycle (as mentioned before), helicopter, motor scooter and a bigger selection of boats and airplanes (one type of aircraft has pontoons for water landings). The Infernus, police boat, taxi, limo, and firetruck will all return in the sequel. All in all, Vice City will contain over 100 vehicles -- a huge leap over the last game.

Like I said in my previous update, Rockstar North has heard your complaints about the lack of interior exploration. This time around, you'll have the opportunity to enter shopping malls, banks, bars/nightclubs and more. As for the usual outdoor locations, Vice City will be around 2 or 2 and a half times bigger than Liberty City. And as of this update, the entire city can be explored from the very beginning of the game.

Like it or not, GTA: Vice City will also have a whole slew of licensed songs from the '80s. Some of the bands/artists that will make up the soundtrack include: Cutting Crew, Judas Priest, Blondie, and Michael Jackson. A total of 9-10 hours of music will come with the game. If I remember correctly, GTA3 only had 3 hours (including Chatterbox).

Lastly, Rockstar North plans to pack in over 100+ missions into Vice City. And they promise that most of them will be longer and more complex. During those missions, you'll have access to around 40 weapons (some of them are from previous GTA games). Needless to say, more missions equals more cutscenes. To be exact, 80 minutes worth of new cutscenes. GTA3 had less than 40 minutes of in-game movies.

Well, that's all I have for now. Look out for more information later.

August 27, 2002 update

Up until now, information on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City had been scarce. But with less than two months until release, Rockstar has finally revealed several new screenshots, movies, and storyline tidbits. In the screenshots below, you can see that motorcycles are indeed in the game and that the police will actually drop down from helicopters if you create enough havoc. We'll have more info on Vice City later. Until then, enoy the screens and teaser movie below. Or if you want to enter the official site, click here.

August 19, 2002 update

Now before you go and e-mail me stupid questions about a Grand Theft Auto: Vice City rumor that you heard on some message board, let me just say that Rockstar Games has released very little information about the latest game in the Grand Theft Auto series. So if you ask me if there will be a [insert weapon or vehicle name here] in the game, I honestly don't know because Rockstar is keeping their lips sealed.

Anyway, what we do know is that Vice City will obviously be set in a city similar to Miami, Florida. Also, instead of taking the series forward in time, Vice City is actually set in the '80s. As a result, radio stations and such will mostly play music from that time frame. Lastly, the only new vehicle we've seen is the golf cart (see below).

As for the graphics, they are twice as good as GTA3's visuals. Everything has a higher polygons count and twice as many textures. There are also more animations. For example, instead of just seeing people walking on the sidewalk, we will also see some of them roller blading, sunbathing, or jogging. Also, DMA has heard your complaints about the last game and they are trying to get more buildings that you can enter.

That's all for now. Enjoy the screenshots below and we'll keep you up to date on any announcements that Rockstar will make in the near future.
