Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance By: Matt C. on May 24, 2002 For the fifth year in a row since 1997, Hideo Kojima and his team have displayed a new trailer showcasing the most recent version of Metal Gear Solid at E3. This year, a very humorous video of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance was shown at Konami's booth. Technically, Substance isn't really a new chapter in the MGS story, but rather a massive director's cut to Sons of Liberty. And I use the term "director's cut" lightly. MGS2: Substance is jam-packed with so many new Easter Eggs, it's enough to make one lightheaded - especially considering that the original Metal Gear Solid 2 had enough content to keep you occupied for weeks. To put this in perspective, Substance will ship on one dual-layered DVD. In addition to Sons of Liberty, Substance will contain five new episodes titled Snake Tales. As you can tell by the name, Snake Tales will have Solid Snake as the main character. There will also be over 200 VR Missions stages and over 100 stages in the "alternative missions" mode. Lastly, Solid Snake/Pliskin is playable through out the Big Shell episode, and players will have the option of using Raiden during the Tanker mission. Even the Ninja will be playable in the VR mode and in the main game. Perhaps the best new mini-game in Substance is the ability to take Solid Snake skateboarding on the Big Shell. It is unclear whether or not there will be objectives like in Tony Hawk 4, but this mode should still provide endless hours of good clean fun. Unfortunately, according to Mr. Kojima, the Xbox version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance will be released first this November. The PS2 and PC release dates of the game are still undecided at this time. Needless to say, I'll post new info on this highly anticipated game when it becomes available. |
