Wednesday May 28, 2003 Sony shows off new 'PSX' entertainment platform The PlayStation 3 is definitely in development, but it appears that Sony still has big plans for its amazingly successful PlayStation 2 platform for the next few years. Case in point, the Sony Corporation announced today that it will release a new entertainment device in Japan this year, dubbed the PSX. Surprisingly, the company has already revealed that it plans to release the device in North America and Europe in 2004. Not to be confused with the popular abbreviation of the original PlayStation, the PSX will feature the same qualities that the current PlayStation 2 offers, as well as a beefy 120 GB hard drive, a TV and broadcast satellite tuner (yes, you can record TV shows/movies), a DVD burner, Sony Memory Stick compatibility and built-in Ethernet support so there is no need to attach a Network Adaptor. It appears the PSX will make good use of the PSP as well. Although it is capable of playing videogames, Sony wants consumers to be aware that the PSX is geared towards people who simply enjoy digital entertainment in general, not just gamers who want a game console with expensive bells and whistles. As a result, we don't expect the PSX to be very affordable for young teenagers working at fast-food restaurants, much like the PS2. Anyway, we'll have an exact release date and price at a later date. PSX

Gary Locke has signed a bill into law that prohibits retail outlets to sell or rent games depicting violence against police officers to people under 17 in Washington State. Refusing to obey the new law would cause the retail store to face a $500 fine. "We intentionally made the law narrow to overcome court challenges by focusing on the compelling state interest of protecting the lives of law enforcement officers, but parents need to know that some of these cop-killer games also feature the murder and torture of women and minorities," said Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson, the bill's sponsor. A poster on the MeriStation.com (a Spanish web site) message boards has produced quite a stir among the gaming community, as the person has posted "exclusiva" leaked screenshots for ICO 2, or NICO. ICO is pronounced "knee-co" not "eye-co". My Spanish is poor, but many people seem to be please that the person has posted the screenshots. As usual, I am going to take the screens with a grain of salt until SCEI releases official word on the game, although the pictures are certainly interesting. I would like to thank several of our Spanish speaking readers for telling me about the site. -Matt C. Wednesday April 2, 2003 Driver 3 pushed back into 2004 Development on Driver 3 appeared to be going smoothly, but apparently, this is not the case as Infogrames has announced that the game will ship around spring 2004. Driver was intended to go gold around late 2003. The reason for the delay can be summed up by a statement from Martin Edmondson, managing and development director at Reflections Interactive: "Driver 3 is a complex game that comes with amazingly high expectations," said Edmondson. "It is important to both Reflections Interactive and Atari to dedicate the time and resources necessary to ensure that Driver 3 meets our own goals for exciting gameplay and next-gen performance laid out by our ambitious design document. Reflections has asked Atari for more time to make sure Driver 3 has only the highest production values from start to finish in all facets of the game. Atari is happy to help us do whatever it takes to redefine the genre that the Driver series created." I don't want to jump start any rumors, but will Reflections use this extra time to include a 2-player mode? Hopefully. -Matt C.
