Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
By: Matt C. on May 19, 2003

Publisher: Konami of America | Developer: KCEJ | Genre: Action |
Release: October 2003 | # of Players: 1-2 | Rating: RP

When Konami of America released Contra: Shattered Solider on the PlayStation 2 late last year, it retained all of the great qualities from classic Contra titles, but it also managed to include new features that only a next generation console can provide. The Japan based company is taking the exact same approach with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is scheduled to ship this October.

If you can recall the nearly unforgettable Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles titles on the NES, SNES, and arcade back in the early 90s', you can most certainly paint a picture of how the PlayStation 2 update will play out. Players once again take the role of either Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello, as they explore and battle their way through city streets, underground sewers, roof tops, and possibly the Technodome (we're making a logical guess here). There are a total of 6 stages with over 35 levels. The best part is that the game is presented in full 3D cel-shaded environments and characters that look very similar to the new Ninja Turtles cartoon show.

Each Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle will have their own special attack, although we don't know if using it will slightly reduce health like in the previous games. In addition, each turtle will have different attributes. For instance, Leonardo is the fastest of the bunch, while Raphael is the overall strongest. Keeping with tradition, the game has fairly simple controls, with a strong and weak attack button, along with a button to jump. However, scrolls will be placed throughout each level, which will unlock new moves and special effects. Hopefully this will prevent the gameplay from becoming repetitive.

The Ninja Turtles will face numerous enemies, including hordes of Foot Soldiers, Mousers, and deadly bosses such as Baxter Stockman and Shredder. There will even be original bosses created by the development team. Two modes of play will also be available; Story Mode (2 player co-operative) and VS Mode. The VS mode allows you to compete with a friend using the Turtles themselves or some of the games' major bosses. Splinter, Casey Jones, and April O'Neal will make appearances in the game, but we are not sure if you can use them in the VS mode.

As fans of the old-school Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle videogames, we are quite excited about the upcoming PS2 update. When we receive additional screenshots and info from Konami, we will definitely post it here. Look forward to it.
